How to Choose the Right Cello Size
By Marcus Lee ·
Cellos come in sizes from 1/10 to full size. The right fit supports posture, reach, and sound production—especially for young learners.
Measure arm reach
Have the student extend the left arm straight out to the side. Measure from neck to middle of the palm. Use this as a starting point with the sizing chart below.
- 45–50 cm: 1/10 to 1/8
- 50–56 cm: 1/4
- 56–63 cm: 1/2
- 63–69 cm: 3/4
- 69+ cm: 4/4 (full size)
Test seated posture
When seated, the C‑peg should be near the left ear, knees gently touching the lower bouts, and the left wrist neutral with first position reachable without strain.
Rent before you buy
Kids grow fast—renting for 6–12 months saves money and ensures progressive sizing. Ask for a setup with quality strings and a well‑cut bridge.
Ask your teacher
Bring your child to the first lesson without a cello if unsure; we’ll size and advise on trustworthy rental shops in the UK and USA.
